Premier League Skill Standards

  1. Excellent ball control on serve receive and defense to deliver clean and accurate passes to the setter. 

  2. Defensively reads attackers well and makes reactive decisions; digs hard-driven balls, can chase down shots, and generally exhibits good ball control to keep the ball in system. 

  3. Can bump set and/or handset the ball cleanly and accurately to desired location. If a setter, can handset and run a variety of different tempos. 

  4. Can hit the ball with power and precision using a variety of shots (cross, line, high line, off-hands, etc); reads block and adjusts accordingly.

  5. If a blocker, has strong technique in blocking; can read the hitter and times blocks well. Can consistently take away lines/angles or gets blocks/touches.

  6. Can present a challenging serve; preferably a variety of different serves (jump serve, top, float, etc) and strategically places serves targeting a location on the court.

  7. Exhibits good court awareness, game strategy, decision-making, and has an understanding of teammates’ and opponents’ positioning on the court.

  8. Exhibits good communication, athleticism, teamwork, a sense of competitiveness, and a desire to continually improve skills.
